I added the trim tab to s/n 752 back in 2002 at the insistence of my A&P/IA
who said it was required because of the engine that had been installed (I
don't have the exact note at hand from the Type Data Certificate).

In any event I purchased the kit from SkyPort and did the work under the
watchful eye of my A&P/IA (he make no money telling me I had to do this).
Using the instructions with the kit I added the trim tab to my existing
elevator (an exercise in aluminum working), and added the trim cable and
control. The elevator work was easy compared to adding the trim cable. I
had to remove the horizontal stabilizer in order to properly run the cable
within it.

It was several months of weekend work, but it was worth it (in my opinion)
as I noticed much better trim control than with the down load from a spring
on the elevator.

Subject: [ercoupe-tech] Gross Weight STC Upgrade

I would like to upgrade my sn 977 to the 1320 gross. However, I do not have
the elevator with the trim tab, and would have to also add the cable and
control for the trim tab. Costs for all that would be about $1300 for the
increase. I am questioning if it is actually worth that much to me.
I have two questions: One, someone said once that a trim tab could be added
to my elevator, has anyone done this recently or has an old elevator that
the tab has been added to on their plane?
Second, how much weight does that add to my plane? Obviously I would not
gain the entire 60 lbs, since the hinge, tab, and control would eat up some
of the 60 lbs.
