Here in the UK we are finding out! “Motorists and fly tippers could be targeted by police spy planes The Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), programmed to capture high resolution images at a distance of 20,000ft, could be in use by Kent and Essex Police as early as 2012. Designed to operate in potentially hazardous environments, the drones have been used by British troops in Afghanistan to monitor enemy action and were originally intended to boost maritime surveillance and border controls. But documents released under the Freedom of Information Act have revealed they will now be used for the “routine” monitoring of anti-social motorists, protesters, agricultural thieves and fly tippers.” http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/7057094/Motorists-and-fly-tippers-could-be-targeted-by-police-spy-planes.html The GA community are displeased at this news to say the least. We assume they won’t be transponding otherwise they will be detectable by criminals. They can’t rely on TCAS to see light aircraft as many don’t have transponders – gliders, paragliders, many vintage aircraft don’t even have electrics. However there is a secret ‘sense and avoid’ technology being developed we are told. We already have very crowded air space so we don’t know what will happen. But many have recalled how Spitfires dealt with V1’s during the second world war – pull alongside and flip them over with your wing! That should wake the drone controllers up.
