Oil migrating out of the engine and through the starter discourages a
clean engine compartment and maximum operational starter life.
A brief (please verify before proceeding) reference to available
information suggests that Delco superseded its gear housing (at the
forward end of the starter) Part No. 1910796 with Part No. 1938732 in
later production years. The latter is machined to take an oil seal
(which does a much better job of keeping engine oil in the engine).
The seal is Part No. 1918047.
It's not rocket science to have an earlier housing machined to accept
the later seal.
Any of our professionals care to venture an opinion as to:
(1) whether they would consider this a minor modification (do it, put
in engine log book)
for a C-90 (same TCDS, although C-90 starters may already have the
seal), and/or
(2) what course of action they would propose as a "minimum cost"
approach (other than
"don't ask, don't tell") to modify an earlier C-75, C-85 or STC C-85
starter gear
housing to accept the later "factory" seal?

This is a common oil leak. You can remove the starter and replace the
oil seal in the starter.
That will give you a few years of a leak free or less leaky seal. The
whole construction is not perfect.
I assume some oil residue there is no reason for concern.

Subject: [ercoupe-tech] Oil leak at starter
The starter shaft that moves in and out is leaking oil. Has anyone had
this problem? If so how and what is needed to correct this problem. I
cannot find a drawing showing the starter installation or information
about seals etc....Any help would be appreciated.
