I have been watching the alternator/generator discussion with interest.  I 
would say a LOT of the generator problems are related to the Voltage Regulator. 
 These old regulators are full of relays that depend on magnetic field 
strengths to regulate and are temperature dependent.  Contact points arc and 
pit.  
It would be pretty straight forward to design a solid state regulator, but the 
paperwork would probably short circuit such a project.
Would it be possible (easy) to make an adapter to convert the generator drive 
to a pulley?
