For those who have followed my pesky generator failure, I probably found the
problem today by accident.
For those who had not followed my discussion on this, my coupe had its
generator removed and overhauled at an FAA facility. Charging was still
erratic, generator removed again and bench checked OK. Regulator was then
replaced with a new one, although the old one checked out ok too. Then the
master switch was suspect, it was replaced with a new one, still not cured. I
bought it with that history, but the charging was very erratic to not at all.
Flashed the fields and made some checks, no solution.
Today as I am tearing the plane apart to do a batch of things, to include
replacing the generator with a cessna alternator, and as I was about to take
the field wire from the generator, I noticed a sleeve on the wire, obviously
original equipment, and wiped it off - it had a big A on the sleeve! Yep, way
back when, someone switched the field and the armature wires on the generator!
I am still going to put on the alternator, not sure just what damage was caused
with the switch of wires. I am glad I am rewiring, if you just bend these old
wires, the insulation just flakes off, and will be replaced with new wire.
