I learned as a student pilot to always turn the prop backwards when you have to reposition the prop. This is a safety measure. Backwards the couplings would not engage and no accidentally engine start happens.

A lot of people do this to move the prop during periods of immobility because the mags won't fire and cause the engine to accidently start if the mag switch is on. What does pulling the prop through backward do to mess up the engine?
