All,
I doubt that the Eroupe should be considered the first jet powered airplane. 
Perhaps the first JATO plane. But I'm not sure that some experiments along jet 
lines might have also been conducted in other countries. The Whittle engine was 
running in test cells in the mid-thIrties and I don't know when they first put 
it in a flyable airframe.
I also personally draw a distinction between jet and rocket propulsion. Despite 
the J in JATO, I would class the Ercoupe flights as rocket propelled as opposed 
to jet propelled.

Although not shown in that clip, they later took the propeller off and flew it 
by rockets alone! That HAD to make an Ercoupe the first jet powered plane on 
the planet!
