You sure got that right.  I don't know how much that led to the destruction, 
but someone definitely installed them "inside out" so to speak.  Yes, I have 
noticed it is a common mistake, certainly SEEMS more correct to cushion the 
plexiblass I guess. Isn't it fun to replace them?
