But even then, it would only HALF empty.  Thanks to the post by Ed and Hortmuts 
site ( I don't know how I missed that part of the site Hartmut) I can 
understand now why I was asking silly questions.
The pump inlet and overflow outlets are in fact several inches from the bottom 
of the tank, but have an elbow and a pipe reaching near the top of the tank! 
Great Ercoupe design again, even if both the elbows broke off, you could 
continue to fly without interruption! Now, I FINALLY understand the system.
