You are not being too naive about how simple this seems to be at all. John Cooper tells me that in the past, their deal with trying to make an STC for these was soured by it appearing that every installation was seemingly different. There will certainly be a requirement to put two new holes in the belly pan, I don't think the right side will come out where the old one did, so in all probability you would need to cover the existing hole and cut new ones. I will know more about rerouting fuel and other lines when I attach the prototype to my plane. Now, this is how I propose to eliminate as many problems as possible. First of all, on the way to me by Fed Ex is a brand new set of Alon twin stacks and a belly pan from an Alon. I am going to pull my prop and exhaust system, and bolt them on my C85-12, to insure the "prototype" fits perfectly on my SN 977 plane. If major changes were made to later engine mounts I am not aware of any. This set will then become the pattern for a company making the rest of the sets (with alterations noted if necessary). This might not be suited for the faint of heart or a mechanic that cannot think outside of the box.
