Hi Al,

Ercoupe engine cooling depends on the area above the upper baffles
being a "high pressure" area and that below being a "low pressure" area
(relatively speaking). If a nose bowl were fitted that had a fresh air
intake hole were installed on a coupe without the cabin fresh air duct
and control, that hole MUST be plugged or it will upset the necessary
pressure difference.

If your temperature gauge is reading correctly and if the engine is
correctly timed, I would recommend removal of the upper and side
cowlings (can be done as a unit). At night, place a strong light
source low in the engine compartment...first on one side; then on the
other. Get on a stool and look down from above. Any gaps of over 1/8"
should be reduced. There should be a flexible seal between baffles
17-42 and 17-43 and the side cowls. Originally, a tight seal between
17-39 and 17-40 and the top cowl was by felt pieces glued inside the
top cowling.

Also verify that front baffles shown in Fig. 17 of the Parts Manual,
items 45 and 46 seal well to both the cylinder and the nose bowl, and
that the baffle, item 17-47 is installed.

A good "rule of thumb" is that when all is as it should be oil
temperature should be 100º - 110ºF above ambient OSA.

Keep in mind that I'm not a mechanic!

Regards,

WRB
