In my humble opinion, private pilots should not require medical certificates at all. Commercial and above (where you could be taking passengers for hire) should.
Absolutely!!! AOPA has the stats to support this (off the top of my head, it is something like less than 2% of accidents having a medical problem. I think that there is a fat bureaucracy mucking with medicals that we cannot get rid of... a veritable parasite (not that this is new to the Federal "function").
