Hi Detlev Forgot to mention in my previous mail. The support requiring $KCODE and jcode.rb in ruby 1.8 ( I was using ruby-1.8.6 ) is built into ruby-1.9 and hence specific call/reference is no longer required. Sorry about the oversight
