I'm using emacs, but thinking of switching to textmate. It's useful to have textmate or smultron for ErlTL files because although they don't color the Erlang syntax, they colorize everything outside <% and %>.
I think the best way to learn is to create a simple app, like a blog engine, referring back to Programming Erlang if you get stuck on language issues. Since you're just starting out, it would be useful to hear of the areas where you think you're having the most trouble.
