i've a 1k-rez elevation model of the world & an elev.lut file i've
created to
  display colors.

Problem: my data values range from approx -9000 m to 9000
m (mariana's trench to everest) for a total of approx 18000 possible
values. If i'm allowed only 256 colors in the .lut file (i'm not sure
of
this, but experimenting w/more colors has failed/crashed ERM), i can
achieve
  a new color value at a relatively coarse 70m resolution (18000 / 256
=
~70). For the most part, this is fine- but in low, flat areas (i.e.
northern Europe, East US) i'd like a 15-20 m color interval. Is it
possible
to use 1024 or more colors in the .lut file? If not, any
suggestions?

i'm using ERMapper 5.5 for IRIX; i've access to 6.1 on NT, though
if possible, i'd like to solve it on the IRIX box.

  thanks,
  john

ps- the elev.lut file i created is pretty cool: majenta-dark
blue-light blue-dark green-yellow-brown-white, much more
national-geographicky than the provided palette. if interested, i can
e-mail it to ya.
