I bet you are using Win2000.
I have similar problem and am almost sure it is due to a bad driver (compatibility issue with Win2000) for my video card.
When this happens, I go to the properties of my video (settings) and modify the refresh rate (frequency) of the monitor (from 75 Hz to 85 or 70).
