Dugald,

did you saved the file as a new ers after the formula application? if in 
your formula you used something like "IF NOT INREGION(R1) THEN NULL ELSE 
I1", you have to generate a new data set and save the results before 
compressing. Remeber to use "0" as the null value field when saving.
