Landsat 7 georeferencing

Can anyone help me with the correct way to register Landsat 7 data once each of the bands has been imported using the binary BSQ import on all bands?  I've tried everything I can think of and the map oriented data never seems to reference itself properly even when the original import settings specify the coordinate system used.    Also I need to create a virtual dataset comprising all 8 Landsat bands.  The ER Mapper help files are just confusing.  I would appreciate a simple explanation of the processes involved.   Thanks
