I hope you got your answer before now but I would use a formula to 
assign ranges of z values to a specific value/colour.

eg:
if i1 < 1000 and i1 >= 500 then 255 else
if i1 < 1500 and i1 >= 1000 then 180 else
etc...

where i1 = z values
