A much simpler/faster method is to use 'gridfloat' in ArcInfo. After that, all that is necessary is to remove the extension from the resulting file and create a .ers file. I simply copy and rename an existing file and edit it. All the necessary values can be found if you 'describe grid' in arcinfo. Remember to specify -9999 as the null value, as this is the default in ArcInfo.
