I used the wrong word. Replace deployment with development. A system can
be deployed with troops trained for the purpose, but to develop it you need
people with lots of experience. I wonder where they are?
There was a flurry of job talk on this list. I couldn't find it in a brief
search, but as I remember it was about companies hiring people with rocketry
experience. Was this flurry a result of star wars?
How could you gage the effects of talent drain? Due to the secret nature
of the project people would jut stop posting or leave the list (amateur ranks)
altogether. A more subtle effect of being offered money to do something you
love doing (even if you don't take the job) is increased self worth. In some
this leads to a warm fuzzy feeling, but in others .........
Things have really changed in the last year. I once mentioned on this
list that my glass was still half full, but a much smaller glass, that was
right after the collapse of the dot coms, but before 9-11.
I find myself these days wishing for a new glass to half fill with fresh
water.
