For those big-calculation jobs, the Physics Department at UC
Berkeley has just the tool you need: A five-foot slide rule.

The department seeks additional funds for new equipment associated
with a curriculum update. Also, it is running out of storage space. So
emeritus Professor Howard Shugart led some younger colleagues on a
"search and de-store" mission.

According to today's San Francisco Chronicle, "Recovered from the
dusty attic of the physics department are tall glass tubes filled with
mystery gases, piles of electrical gadgets dating back to when Thomas
Edison was in his prime, finely crafted brass and wood devices from
when science took aesthetic pride in its instruments, and many items
whose purpose has been lost in the crypt of time."

The five-foot slide rule, however, is no such mystery item; its purpose
was to teach the use of hand-held slide rules. Hanging in front of a
class, it would be visible throughout the room.

About 1,000 items were given to Harvey Clar's auction gallery in
Oakland. Some of these will be on preview tomorrow (Friday), and a trial
auction of 20 items will be held Sunday.

To come back partly on-topic, I doubt anything listed would serve our
purposes. I post this for the benefit of any collectors out there.

For more information, see http://www.harveyclar.com/ or call (510) 428-
0100. You might also contact the Chronicle's reporter, Charles Burress,
at [EMAIL PROTECTED] The auction gallery is at 5644 Telegraph
Avenue in Oakland. Preview runs from 1 to 6 tomorrow; the trial auction
and one scheduled for 28 July will start at 10 AM.
