Instead of rolling the stainless for a welded built up motor how
about forging? You might even be able to cold forge the parts for a weld
up motor. Hot forging and you could do it in two parts.
You should try putting a 1/4" plate of stainless in a 20 ton press.
If you put a blade on the ram and two parallel pieces on the base about
2" apart you should be able to bend the stainless, don't take much to
get a semi circle (a lot of small bends, that is). I've taken 1/8"
stainless scrap and bend it all over the place in a brake, including
bends across bends. That was with 304 not 316, but I think you should
look around more before you commit to cutting a big block of SS.
Too bad you can't cast stainless;-)
