It was announced at the World Space Congress in Houston that
the X-Prize is fully funded at $10M. Two new contestants have been
added to the list. One of them is John Carmack's team at Armadillo
Aerospace; the other is a group in eastern Europe.
Gerald Nordley volunteered to organize ERPS participation in
Silicon 2003. Such participation is mutually desirable, since this is the
most technology-oriented of local science fiction conventions.

TESTING
-------
Dave Masten
Dave reported that the UTC (United Technologies) site on Metcalf
Road north of Morgan Hill is not a possibility due to liability concerns.
Gerald Nordley reported that he is negociating with contacts at Ames
Research Center.
Substantial progress on construction of a dedicated water supply
at the Ranch was made on Saturday. A hydrant was placed and
concreted near the test stand, all of the pipe has been laid, and most of
the plumbing to tie it into the two tanks is complete. Unfortunately, due
to a mis-communication with Chuck, his water system drained
completely. This may result in more restrictions being imposed on our
use of Ranch water.
A work party is scheduled for Sunday morning, 20 October, to
finish up work on this system.

COMPOSITES
----------

Kevin reported that assembly of his filament winder is nearly
complete. A five-foot Acme screw driven by a stepper motor to carry the
bobbin back and forth. The machine can vacuum-bag and cure without
major changes in assembly.
Dan reported progress on his carbon-braid option.

NEW BUSINESS
------------
Chris suggested that, since a number of members have
undertaken to produce training materials (Web pages, Powerpoint
presentations, and the CD-ROM), it would be worthwhile to organize a
training team. This will be discussed further at the next Board meeting.
Meeting #246 adjourned at 9:05 PM. The next meeting will take place on
7 November 2002.
Aftermath
---------
A total of $8.50 in pun taxes was collected.
Respectfully submitted,
Chris Winter
