My condolances, John. What I have been saying to my associates is "FIRST, find out who the 'good guys' are at the FAA." I have been an EAA member and flying club officer for 26 years and occasionally have to deal with the local FSDO for ferry permits, etc. One of the stories on this general subject has to do with XCOR when they modified the Long-Eze to become the Eze-Rocket. IIRC, they approached their local FSDO to relicense N132EZ with an experimental non-certified engine. The story is going around that the FAA guy did not ask what particular engine or even what *type* of engine. I may be wrong about this, if any of the XCOR people have a different story, please correct me.
