What about COTS IC gyros, I thought of trying somehting along those lines for keeping track of orientation for purposes of guidance. Is anyone familiar with the GYROSTAR (TM) product? muRata makes a small ceramic bimorph vibrating based angular velocity senser. (piezoelectric vibrating gyroscope) It supports up to 50Hz, but I don't know how well it would handle shock, or how precisely it would perform under a constant heavy G load (Or owrk at all for that matter). It seems like I saw some one somewhere that would sell alotments of one unit for about $50, but I don't remember for certain since it has been awhile since I was looking. Well I am certainly very interested :-) The other day I finally got my
mega128 AVR based controller board up and running. My intent was to build a
simple guidance system that fits on top of my PML Eclipse. I was hoping to
avoid relatively expensive gyros by using accellerometers (free samples :-)
but I don't think I can pull that off. So anything about gyros is of
interest to me.

For those of you not familiar with the mega128, it's an 8 bit MuC based on
the 8051 core optimized for almost 1 MIPS per MHz. I run it at 16 MHz so
that results in decent horsepower. It has tons of peripherals such as 2
USARTs, 1 ADC with 8 inputs muliplexed, PWM output, RTC built in (external
X-tal of course), TWI, SPI, JTAG, 128 KB Flash, 4 KB SRAM, 32 regs, 4 KB
EEPROM.

I think everybody would be very interested.
