In its continuing quest to reinvent itself, Scientific American has in its
December 2002 issue introduced an end-of-year honor roll it calls "The
Scientific American 50". This consists of a Research Leader, Business
Leader, Policy Leader and Company in each of 12 categories:
Agriculture; Chemicals and Materials; Communications; Computing;
Defense; Energy; Environment; Manufacturing; Medical Diagnostics;
Medical Treatments; Transportation; and General Technology. The
number is rounded out with a Research Leader of the Year and a
Business Leader of the Year.

    There are many worthy entries. But the one to mention here is "a
small, scrappy company built on a desert airfield in Mojave, Calif." -- a
company known as XCOR Aerospace.

    Congratulations to J. G. and crew!
