Could one not feed the solid fuel, say via a slow (but strong) piston, into the area of the rocket where combustion was taking place? Or would the likely weight of such feed mechanisms, being powerful enough to overcome the force of combustion so as to keep the combustion in place with respect to the rocket, outweigh the extra thickness of the walls?
