Rep. Ken Calvert Introduces Space Legislation,
Agrees to Assist Hobby Rocketeers
June 5, 2003
Rep. Ken Calvert (Republican, California) introduced the "Invest in Space Now Act" on
June 5 in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Act would provide tax incentives to
those who invest in the emerging commercial space launch vehicle industry. The purpose
of the legislation is to support cost effective, commercial space launch vehicles and
reusable launch vehicles that are internationally competitive. Three members of the
California Congressional delegation - Reps. Duke Cunningham, John Doolittle and Lois
Capps - as well as ten others are original co-sponsors of the legislation.
Rep. Calvert has agreed to lead Congress on another space issue, the elimination of
bureaucratic provisions that limit the purchase of small amounts of rocket propellants
by hobby rocketeers, many of whom are university students or professors. Senator
Michael Enzi (Republican, Wyoming) has introduced legislation in the U. S. Senate, S.
724, that addresses this issue. Rep. Calvert has agreed to introduce a companion bill
in the U.S. House of Representatives, according to staffer Deena Contreras.
CSA supports the "Invest in Space Now Act" as well as Senate bill 724. CSA requested
that Rep. Calvert introduce a companion bill to S. 724 in the U.S. House of
Representatives.
