He's a Freshman at Utah State (home of Pons and Fleishman??).Nope, that would be the University of Utah (in Salt Lake City), Utah State (aka USU)
is located up in Logan (about 1.5 hours north of Salt Lake City). That's where they
hold the annual Small Sat Conference (which I still haven't managed to get to in spite
of me living just 3 hours south). They actually have one of the best Aerospace
Engineering program in the US (at least I'd guess its in the top 10-15). We've done
a hybrid motor static firing up at their facilities before, and if I can ever get caught
up in my classes (and with my thesis project) to the point that I have spare time again,
I could probably use their facilities for some biprop tests I want to do......
And then there's the professor who "stood nervously away fromIt isn't just the neutrons you need to worry about. IIRC, most of the IEC fusion
Wallace's reactor" - should he be teaching physics if he's that afraid
of 4 neutrons per minute? 8-)
devices I've heard of eventually start kicking off decent amounts of UV and maybe
even X-ray radiation.....but it's been at least 6 months since I read up on the topic
last.

As far as I can tell we did a lot more Shuttle flights than capsule flights, no?Yeah, but we've succesfully flown several different manned designs (Mercury, Gemini, and
Apollo), and the Russians have as well. We have also used ballistic reentry or aerobraking
techniques for many space probes. Both the Shuttle and the Russian Buran system were fairly
similarly sized and similar in weight. So, IMO capsules present a design space that is more
thoroughly explored, though our experience there is also dissappointingly limited.
There's also no mention of reusability of these new capsules. It's rather interesting that reusable capsules could look quite a bit like some current X-Prize contenders. Weren't reusable or field replaceable heatshields discussed on this list a few months ago?Yeah, if designed in, it shouldn't be that tough to do. There are several different options
I've seen for doing so.
