I got one and they do work, I bought mine when it was $39 and thought I got a deal. Start calling you local Radio Shacks, they are going real quick. They work with Delorme's TOPO too.

OK, Radio Shack dropped the price on their $99 GPS AGAIN to $29.95! If you EVER wanted a GPS engine to run your laptop map program or an APRS TNC, this is about as cheap as they come.
The GPS engine is a 16 channel SONY. It runs on 3 AAA batteries, or you can add a 7805 (RS-276-1770) regulator and feed it 12vdc. KE5C did this, see his .jpg at http://www.kkn.net/~ke5c/images/gps.jpg
The PDA version is RS 20-1601. The laptop version is RS 20-1602.
The only difference between the PDA and laptop versions is the software and
cable bundle. You have to apply at least 1 volt on the RX pin(pin 3 on a
db9, red wire from the GPS) to wake it up. I gave it +5.
See http://www.grundlgasse.at/thomas/digitraveler/.
The power plug is a 4.0mm OD 1.7mm ID (RS 274-1532)The same one for a VX5 or VX7.
Took a couple of min. to cut off the PDA connector, solder the 3 wires to a DB9(RS 276-1538),put on a shell, add 3 AAA batteries and fire up the laptop with Street Atlas 8, which I had already, select generic GPS and it works!! When I plugged in the GPS to the laptop, the green lite on the GPS came on.
