RP does it that way (?): http://rocketprop.com/sv-1_and_sv-2.htm When I contacted RP early this year, they said NOT to use an igniter but dissolved catalyst in the fuel (kero) to make it hypergolic with 95-98 % HP. The more recent RP website sports a firing alcohol&cat/HP motor, probably inspired by JJ Rusek's USP, also without cat packs. Maybe ignite the kero with a pre-run (slug) of ethanol doped with, say, 15 % manganous acetate tetrahydrate, next open the RP-4 valve. Or a tri-prop approach. Hard starts are to be expected during flows optimisation... I witnessed one, years ago.
