Rare mention of liquids on aRocket :)
--- Begin Message --- Fellow Ottawa Rocketry Group (And Space Modellers) member Glen Hillier tested a new version of his
regen-cooled N2O+methanol motor this past weekend. I'm not certain that he still has access to this list,
so I thought I'd give a quick overview based o my conversations with him (and being present
during the many hours of machining time required to build the motor).

The motor is a 150mm monotube design with a "split tank" using a teflon piston to separate the methanol and N2O, with
the methanol riding on top of the N2O. The design thrust of this motor was about 400lb, but it only achieved about half
of that--he's already half-way built a new injector setup that should fix the combustion efficiency problems.

The cool (pun, I know) thing about this motor design is that it's regeneratively cooled, and the chamber is made entirely
out of *aluminum*, with a machined graphite nozzle. An earlier scaled-down prototype failed near the end of the
burn--the chamber collapsed, but after some analysis, it became clear that an upscaled motor should work quite
well, without the chamber collapsing--upscaling the motor allowed somewhat thicker chamber walls, and the
increased flow and size of passages would keep things cool enough. That appears to have been a correct analysis, since
the substantially-upscaled version of the design survived without a scratch!
