There is some confusion between section 7.8.5 and chapter 16 in the latest ES3.1 draft. Section 7.8.5 states that an implementation may extend the regular expression constructor grammar, which presumably implies that it does not have to report all syntax errors in the ES3.1 regular expression grammar. Chapter 16 states that an implementation must report errors in regular expression literals as syntax errors. This seems to have confused one of our readers into thinking that ES3.1 disallows regular expression syntax extensions.
