I totally buy this argument. Following the suggestion by Sanjiva should solve this. I could also think of an alternate not very common approach. When it is so easy to extend it, it should also easy to strip something off, or? Maybe you could provide (a) shell script(s) to automatically get rid of some "unwanted" features. Generally I think the modular approach in combination with a more automatic packaging and deployment process is the best way for the future.
