We went with a relational database for the backend. The back end is actually pluggable - we have the notion of a registry API which has a native JDBC backend or a remote "backend" powered by Atom and AtomPub. In fact there's another user that has written an ORM based backend!

We've talked about using SVN too as a backend or JCR. We will look more closely at that after the 1.0 release next week - but the JDBC backend will remain forever and it works very well. The versioning model we've chosen is basically that of SVN.
