We went to the vet today for suture removal, a complete check-up and to further decide how his heartworm would be treated. You might have seen my post to the group about my decision that the vet agreed to try. Anyway, I left him for the afternoon because Doc wanted to get a chest x-ray to get an idea if he had any heart damage. Unfortunately, he does. X-rays can't show anything specific, but he showed me where the vessels are enlarged and probably inflamed and some other areas that indicate damage. His opinion is that much of it will resolve with treatment, particularly with the use of the doxycycline since it also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. He can't really say if he will end up becoming symptomatic or if it will significantly shorten his life, but he definitely expects to see some improvement with treatment. The biggest shock however, is.... Ziggy has a bullet in his chest about 1/2" from his heart! Doc does not think it was recent and does not expect it to be any problem at all, but can you believe that?!?! It literally missed his lungs, his ribs, and his heart by fractions of an inch. He sure has been a lucky boy - except for the heartworms. Doc also estimates his age at about 4. He's doing very well. Much better than I even expected. I had a real concern that there might be a lot of attempts at marking, given that he had just been neutered, but he has only done it once. Of course, it was on Wagner's favorite toy... :( There is a bit more posturing between he and my other dogs, particularly, Wagner, the oldest, but I think they will get beyond it eventually. He is such a happy boy. He loves attention - from anyone. If you pet him, he's your best friend! Also, how is SuzyQ? I'm sorry I haven't written sooner. It's been a bit nuts around here This is my husband's busy time of year, so I haven't really had any help at home with the dogs. I looked at her photos on facebook - God bless you for your kind heart and willingness to take on such a tragedy, and to bring her from the brink - literally. I just don't know how anyone can ignore another's suffering, be it human or animal.
