I've read this before and can't get through it without tears streaming down
my face.

On May 30th of this year, I took a wonderful, sweet, loving foster Eskie to
her forever home in Asheville, NC. Ella had been neglected for some time
and her previous family had basically ignored her since the daughter had
gone to college. She had been banished to the Alabama clay to live. I
drove down and brought her back with me. I became very attached to her and
would have adopted her myself if it were not that my Pasha was starting to
show jealous aggression toward her. I had a number of people want Ella but
the adoptive family that was bringing her into their forever home was the
perfect couple - the type we all in rescue wish we could find for our
Reskies. Ella became the Mom's best friend and constant companion, always
going with her everywhere if just down to the post office.

On July 4th, Ella died. Just fell and died instantly while playing. The
family was painfully in grief. When I got the call I suddenly couldn't
breath and cried with them almost constantly for 2 weeks. After enduring
every test, it was determined, Ella had a weak heart and the simple act of
running after a squirrel caused it to stop.

It's going on 5 months now and I was going through some photos looking for
one that would be good for Christmas. I came across about 15 of Ella. All
the water works and grief flooded over me again. I know in my heart that
Ella picked us to spend her last days. There's an unexplainable attraction
between some dogs and certain people. Some people never experience that
bond. I'm so glad Ella and her family did.

"So today I will continue to think about the dogs and everything I do, every
decision I make, every tear I shed will be for them because as all of us in
rescue know...it is not about us. It is just about the dogs."

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way
its animals are treated."

I wish I knew who the author of this is but I don't. I am sending it to all
who love animals and hope that you will do the same. All eyes view the soul
within.

I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively
into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I
wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid.

As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had
in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked
today. Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to
think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my
past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a
difference in someone's life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my
shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle
fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship.

A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would
be well. Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I
instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would
promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could
to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that
she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked
the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.

I rescued a human today
