Gayle,

Sorry to not be able to meet you, this surgeon is a Hoosier, like I always
wanted to be and am now! I am confident that the "Promised Land" is actually
Indiana.

Today, we visited the surgeon at IU (actually IUPUI!) and learned much
more about this cancer.

Since its intrusion in my left eye in 1988, it spread nowhere other than
the liver, something the specialists are seeing, documenting and targeting. It
seems that this specific form of melanoma targets the eye, then only the liver
after...NO where else as other forms of melanoma. Eye to liver melanoma is a
slow growing form, however as deadly as the others, but caught early can be
treated and give the patient more years of life. We caught this sucker in early
stages with an unrelated scan. The surgeon did not have all scans, just the one
used for the biopsy (no highlight meds on it), will request all recent scans
(several CT with highlight, an MRI with highlight) to determine how she will
“carve” out the portion of my liver that has the melanoma cells. Surgery will
be in a week or so, no big hurry, however it will SMACK this sucker, and doing
the numbers, it will return (as melanoma DOES) when I’m 92 and all my doctors
are retired.. BTW, the surgeon says us “skinny” guys bounce back better after
surgery, she likes my skinny body, makes her work easier and my recovery a lot
quicker.

I will be in a “liver unit”(whatever that means) where Louise can stay,
negating the need for hotel accommodations. Our furbabies will be cared for by
family and friends in our absence.
