Sorry for the late reply, been dealing with the fallout of a bad fall and
just getting back to email and such.

There's no official way to add globals from rules. There are things you can
hack in, as in your example, but they are unsupported.

It would be pretty easy to add such functionality, so feel free to file an
issue and we can take a look.
