Hi Ed! I think that without a goal in mind whether one pursues it knowingly or unknowingly life is not that adventurous or exciting.A goal gives a person something to look forward to and if he/she really ,really wants it badly then he/she works hard to make their dreams come true.however, with the passage of time one's goal's keeps on changing.when a person is young he has a total different set of goals basically all directing towards making his career and he tries to puts all his possible efforts in attaining his career goals .But when one gets settle down n has a family his goals become oriented towards making his family as once he has envisioned it. And so on the goals continue to direct one's life and it's related decisions. However, the underlying point in all this is that one should " NEVER,NEVER GIVE UP" pursuing his/her goals as this is one of those things which keeps one's life full of activities, adventures , excitement n so many more other things...... So keep pursuing your goal till u get it n then move forward towards the next.N enjoy the various hues of life.
