Dear Claire, Paulo, Wichuda and all, Communication is an interesting topic to discuss. First we use different means to communicate in different ways or to different groups of people.
Mail is one to one, slow way. Phone call a real time one to one. Email an asyncrhonous way to get in touch with a group of people at the same time. SMS a fast and asynchronous way to reach one person. So we choose the mean that better suits our message and intent. All this capability that communication technologies give us today, permit to communicate more, but, i think, not better. Communicating better involves to think over the entire process of communication and to figure out what the receiver of our message will get. So what I want to say? What I said does express clearly my thought? How the mean I use to communicate does influence the message? What does the receiver get? How does he understand it? The process is valid for all the means we use inclued face to face talk. Another important aspect is connection. We are in a physical place talking with other people and at the same time we are reachable with our mobile or we have our laptop connected with email and social networks. In this way we are connected with different circles of people. In my opinion (and sure in my life!) all these connections sometimes distract people from their activities and, not least important, don't let them the chanche to dialogue and to know better people near you. the best for you, alberto 2009/8/19 claire <[email protected]> > > Dear all new or old, active or silent,;) > > "The more elaborate our means of communication, the less we > communicate." > > These were the words of Joseph Priestly over 200 years ago. > > But if that was true, what would he make of communications technology > today? > > Do you think people today 'connect' better than people used to with > the help of the Internet or mobile phone? > > Which of the following do you find useful? > When do you use it? > Why? > > mobile phone? > e-mail? > SMS? > MSN? > Blackberry? > Skype? > > Thank you and best regards, > Claire > > > > --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "ESL Podcast".
