To get back to the "specs", you could say it's a document, but it's also a test (unit, integration). You can view it as "executable requirements". The problem here is that we have to agree at least on something like an API so that it compiles at least. But especially as more people work together on ESME, it would be very beneficial, in my opinion, to use it more in the future.
