The redefition of C-^ did it, but not in general, i.e. at startup of M-x
R. Putting it in
/Users/hoffmannc/Library/Preferences/Aquamacs Emacs/Preferences.el
did not yet do it.

I misunderstood you problem. My problem with company completion not comint
completion.
For your issue, make sure that your C-^ is bound to
comint-previous-matching-input-from-input and not comint-previous-input or
something else.
