If multiple preference profiles exist, it would be very useful to allow the user to specify which preference profile to load when ethereal/tethereal loads. The two main ones that come to mind from list discussion would be "most recent" (ie. the settings from when you last exited) and a "standard" (that does not change unless explicitly saved to).
Another nice feature would be to allow the file/open capture/start, etc... to have a "select preference profile" feature... ie. stuff like read filter, display filter, displayed protocols, etc...
