Thanks Jusin.  I am using Mac OS X, which supports ifconfig.  
Basically  I just need to be able to plug in to the switch and capture 
packets.   Is there any special config I need to set in order to 
capture packets without having an IP?, or do I just have to have eth0 
"up".
Just use 'ifconfig' as above (the device names can be discovered with 
'ifconfig -a').  "eth0" is generally not one of the Mac OS X network 
device names :-}.
