GTK stands for Gimp ToolKit and is a GUI library, mainly used in GNOME applications. See http://www.gtk.org/ for details. The GTK+-1.x were the first versions of the API and library, and the GTK+-2.x branch contains a new API. Some things differ significantly between both versions, such as font handling.
