As this is also dock/panel/tool related, here are some inspirations from
a DTP application called Calamus SL. The application comes from Atari
ST, then it was ported to other platforms, however retained the Atari
core.

It's a bit... um... cluttered... ;)

The application is "frame based", where you have a document and
everything is a frame in the document.

That's basically how I'm envisioning Etoile will work -- does everyone else envision the same thing?

Here is list of modules and tools panel. You can click the module at the
top and also tab int the tools panel. It is in french, but you get the
idea just from the images - isn't that great?

I don't think I understand what all of the icons are, which is the biggest problem with icons. I can pick out a few, based on my design background and computer knowledge, but many remain mysterious. I would think it might be more desirable to have either:

1. Fewer modes, so there are fewer icons to learn
2. Icons *and* localized labels
3. Just localized labels -- translating text is much easier to do that building an effective icon
