nothing -- it's just more convenient and help you setting a clean
environment ?
I don't know where I read that, but one of the early usability
surprises when overlapping windows were introduced on the Mac was
that people actually managed fairly well to find even obscured and
hidden windows on the screen as long as the windows remembered their
positions when they were closed and reopened.
So, a "messy desktop" really isn't as much of an issue as you might
think. The computer getting periodic amnesia, however, is.
