I agree, although I can tolerate them. My main objection to arrows is  
that they tend to be abused in modern UI themes like Aqua (menu, popup  
menu, combobox, drop down menu, outline view, browser, disclosure  
button, scroller, back/forward buttons etc.).

I think + and - in outline view are far worse than arrows because you  
cannot tell clearly whether they represent a state or an action. Each  
time I use Windows, I cannot remember if the + sign means the row is  
expanded or rather 'click me' to expand the row.

Could be a good idea. We probably need to test it. Although I'm not  
sure such visual indicators would work well with browser views and  
disclosable views too. Arrows have the benefit to work well with a  
browser view.
